Secured By Design logo

Secured by Design is a scheme set up and owned by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) , the aim of the scheme is to "encourage the building industry to adopt crime prevention measures in the design of developments to assist  in reducing the opportunity for crime and the fear of crime, creating a safer and more secure environment".
All our windows are available to SBD specification. This is standard with the Bygone window and available with our Sash Secure specification on all our other ranges.
SBD covers a number areas including new homes, refurbished homes, schools and hospitals, through to car parks and play areas.

The West Midlands Police have a Community safety house attached to the Brownhills police station which is used as a showhome for a variety of SBD products including burglar alarms and two Masterframe sash windows.

Core principles
The scheme has six core principals, these are used by all those involved in the planning and development process to ensure that the project meets the criteria laid by the scheme.
1.
Integrated approach - all interested parties are involved from initial informal pre-application discussions to completion of project on matters of design and site layout.
2.
Environmental quality and sense of ownership - ensuring that the environment is well designed,
attractive, clearly defined and well maintained to promote a sense of pride, shared ownership and
community responsibility. This includes the design of hard and soft landscaping to minimise the    potential for criminal activity whilst creating a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment. Examples include avoiding the creation of hiding places and blind spots, using low level and thorny plants to create barriers/boundaries and ensuring that these are easily maintained.
3.
Natural surveillance - designing the layout of the development to ensure that community areas such as car parks,  open spaces, footpaths and spaces around buildings are open to view. The greater the perceived risk of detection to a potential offender the less likely they are to offend.
4.
Access and footpaths - The layout of roads, footpaths and cycleways to provide convenient and     adequate access whilst limiting the potential for multiple escape routes.
5.
Open space provision and management - ensuring that open spaces are overlooked and well
maintained.
6.Lighting - ensuring communal areas and pathways are well lit and avoiding areas of deep shadow for security and safety.
