GEORGIAN PERIOD SASH WINDOWS DESIGNED

While the Victorians were perfectly happy with 2” rails, (45-55mm) across the transom line of sash windows (because the extra weight that the new, thicker heavier glass was required to support) their forefathers made sash windows in the Georgian era, with very slender 1 ½” rails (about 38/39 mm)

The challenge for today’s window designers wishing to recreate this Georgian elegance, is how to carry the weight or two sheets of 4mm glass, even 6.8mm of laminated glass and maintain the minimal transom dimension.

Manufacturers of plastic casements have damaging sightlines in excess of 120mm (4”+) that destroys any architectural character of the building, even sash manufacturers insist upon using transoms of 65mm!

So it is great news that Bygone has developed the slimmest rail for top sashes of any PVCu sash window and we are featuring it on the new and improved Symphony Collection of sash windows as standard for all new orders from the end of March 2014.

Watch this space for confirmation of the actual size……how much smaller than the existing 52mm will it be, could we get down to 42mm, maybe 40mm, even less?
